Unveiling the New Medical School at Columbia University

Known globally for exceptional education standards, Columbia University is one of the best institutions. A beautiful green campus and coveted teaching methods is everything that a student needs. Recently the campus got an additional medical building, built by a popular New York based firm- Diller, Scofidio and Renfro. The Roy and Diana Vagelos Education Center. A considerate step taken by the University, the new medical building aims to house medical programs for the medical students, physicians and surgeons at the campus.

The building is a 14-floor glass tower with a striking view of River Hudson. With the glass windows around, there is a seamless connection between the students and the environment- as mentioned by the Diller, Renfro firm.

Diller, Scofidio and Renfro meticulously planned the whole design element of the building and incorporated a strategy called, ‘study cascade’ to show the link between the social space and the study area with a ground to top level staircase. Not only this, there are progressive classrooms, co-working spaces and modern simulation centers in the building to effectively impart medical education.

Sudhir Choudhrie, a renowned philanthropist and businessman, has been long associated with Columbia University for his contributions at the University. He built the Choudhrie Family Student Lounge at the campus site for medical students. Choudhrie is also known to have donated an amount of $2.5 million to set up the Sudhir Choudhrie Professorship of Cardiology at the medical premises.

Diller, Scofidio and Renfro are famous for their brilliant ideas and approach of details. This time while designing this medical center, they installed shades to maximize solar power, fitted green roof top technologies to reduce heat generated by urban asphalt and concrete and planted vegetation to cut down irrigation requirements.

Sudhir Choudhrie on Illuminating Hope for the Impoverished

Sudhir-ChoudhrieMr. Sudhir Choudhrie is not only an acknowledged entrepreneur but also a sensitive individual. He believes in ensuring everyone’s wellbeing and sharing the privileges with those who are less fortunate. He practices what he preaches by making generous donations and participating in non-profitable events that are organized for the betterment of the society. For years, he has been associated with numerous campaigns and charities and donates generous sums to NGO’s to promote their objectives and goals.

He is especially considerate towards children and their welfare. He donates to a charity foundation called ‘I Can’ that contributes to the improvement of the welfare of children with communication problems. Mr. Sudhir Choudhrie’s sensitivity towards the welfare of children was evident with a donation made towards a charitable foundation called the ‘Chase Hospice’ that provides housing and healthcare to children who are suffering from terminal illness. He has also made generous donations to ‘War Child’ which is a foundation working towards the welfare of children affected by wars. ‘War Child’ inculcates hope among children struck by the horror of wars. It even provides therapies to help such children deal with post trauma stress, helping them to move forward by gradually eliminating the dark shadows that battles have cast upon their young minds. It helps by providing education and necessities to aid survival at war struck areas. It is a unique move to ensure no more loss is borne, long after the war takes its toll.

Apart from these, there are many other charitable contributions that Mr. Sudhir Choudhrie has made to support the welfare of children and the impoverished. He also stresses the fact that movements such as these should be encouraged so as to make a difference to the society.
